The Factorio Wiki's Crafting page (October 2026 capture) says an assembling machine set to a recipe should craft the item once all the requested ingredients are in its input slots; that, unlike the player, it doesn't chain-craft, so each step of a recipe needs a machine of its own; and that continuous production takes ingredients brought by belts and inserters, with inserters taking the products out for use elsewhere in the factory. production-chain/factorio-assembler-chain
