Today a furnace takes fuel in its bottom slot and the items to smelt in the top one, and in the Java Edition smelts one item every 200 game ticks (10 seconds). A piece of coal burns for 80 seconds, enough for eight items, and keeps burning to the end once lit, even if nothing is left to smelt.	`UsageUsage`	Wiki
The furnace was added in Indev on 19 February 2010. Before it, the only way to smelt ores was to drop them on the ground and set them alight with flint and steel.	`History, Java Edition IndevHistory, Java Edition Indev, 20100219`	Wiki
In the Java Edition a plain Minecraft furnace smelts one item every 200 game ticks (10 seconds). Factorio's stone furnace smelts at crafting speed 1, so an iron plate takes its recipe's 3.2 seconds, and the steel and electric furnaces, at speed 2, take 1.6 (computed). Factorio's stone and steel furnaces burn fuel, as Minecraft's does.	`Usage`	Wiki
In Minecraft the player loads a furnace through its interface, fuel in the bottom slot and the items to smelt in the top one. Snapshot 13w02a, part of 1.5 (full release 13 March 2013), let hoppers work with furnaces, which the Minecraft Wiki says allows automatic smelting. The wiki also describes hoppers extracting smelted items.	`UsageHistory, Java Edition, 1.5, 13w02aObtaining, Breaking`	Wiki
