A rideable vehicle is something the player boards, such as a car, a sled, a jet ski, or an animal. Riding replaces the player’s own movement with the vehicle’s, often with a set speed, its own physics, or a forced scroll. Some vehicles can be left at any time; others carry the player through a fixed section.

  1. ^Minecarts arrived in Infdev on 18 June 2010 as containers that couldn't be ridden, and on 24 June became rideable and lost their storage. From Alpha v1.0.14 a minecart was an ingredient in the recipes for the minecart with chest and the minecart with furnace. Beta 1.5 added powered rails, which move minecarts automatically, and detector rails, which detect them; Beta 1.6 ended "boosting", a glitch that sped up two carts running side by side.WikiMinecraft Wiki: Minecartrevised
    How we know
Minecarts are not rideable but instead are used to store things in.

The minecart mechanics have been changed to being rideable, removing their ability to store items.

Minecarts are now used to craft minecart with furnace and minecart with chest. A glitch creates a new method of speeding up minecarts, known as "Boosting." Placing two minecarts parallel to each other and moving in the same direction increases the speed of both carts.

Powered rails have been introduced, which enables minecarts to move automatically. The detector rails have been introduced for use in detecting minecarts.

  2. ^Today powered rails speed up a minecart when they carry a redstone signal; without them a cart slows gradually, faster uphill, though it needs none to roll downhill. In the Java Edition minecarts pushed together merge and move as one, like a train, and keep their speed on straight track without powered rails.WikiMinecraft Wiki: Minecart
    How we know
Powered rails powered by redstone give minecarts a boost of speed. Speed is gradually decreased if there are no powered rails to assist its movement … The speed decreases at a faster rate when going uphill, compared to when moving horizontally … A minecart does not need powered rails to assist its movement down a hill.
Usage, powered rails · archived copy ↗
In Java Edition, two or more minecarts can be merged by pushing them into each other so that they overlap. Merged minecarts move as a collective, like a train, and can be useful for long-distance transport because while moving in a straight line, they do not need powered rails to keep their speed.
