The player crafts by laying items out on a grid to match a recipe: a 2×2 grid in the inventory for small recipes such as planks, sticks, torches, and the crafting table, and a 3×3 grid at a placed crafting table, made from four planks, for every recipe. Most recipes are shaped: the ingredients must sit in the right places relative to each other, though the pattern may slide and be flipped left to right. Some are shapeless and take their ingredients anywhere on the grid.Crafting system, Manual craftingCrafting system, Manual craftingCrafting system, Manual craftingCrafting system, Manual craftingWiki
Crafting became a proper feature in Indev on 29 January 2010, with recipes for sticks, pickaxes, torches, swords, and axes, and the same day's later build added the inventory's 2×2 grid and the workbench for the 3×3 grid. Shapeless recipes came in Beta 1.2, and 1.12 added a recipe tab that shows how to craft items crafted before. IGN's 2011 review said Minecraft had no documentation at all.History, Java Edition Indev, 20100129-1447History, Java Edition Indev, 20100129-2332History, Java Edition Beta 1.2History, Java Edition 1.12, 17w13aWiki
The crafter, a block that crafts any crafting-table recipe when it gets a redstone signal and can be fed by hoppers, made automated crafting possible in the base game. It was added in snapshot 23w42a, which the wiki files under 1.21.History, 1.20.3 Experiment, Update 1.21, 23w42aCrafting system, Automated craftingCrafting system, Automated craftingWiki
In Minecraft the player crafts by laying out a recipe's pattern on a 2×2 or 3×3 grid; the crafter, a late addition, made automated crafting possible in the base game. In Factorio the player asks for an item by its recipe: handcrafting runs at crafting speed 1, a recipe's time is its seconds at that speed, missing parts that can be crafted are queued first, and the player can handcraft only the "crafting" and "hand-crafting" categories, which leaves out the furnaces' smelting recipes.Crafting system, Manual craftingHistory, 1.20.3 Experiment, Update 1.21, 23w42aWiki
