Binary-coded decimal
Storing a number as its decimal digits, one to a byte or two to a byte, so the game can show it without dividing.
Binary-coded decimal (BCD) keeps a number as decimal digits. Adding to it needs a carry from digit to digit, but showing it needs only a tile per digit, which suits a processor without a divide instruction.
