With Sonic 3 fitted into the slot on top of the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge, the two play as one 34-megabit game, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, with 14 Emeralds to collect and Knuckles playable. Locked onto Sonic 2, the cartridge lets the player go through Sonic 2 as Knuckles. The manual says it is designed for Sonic 3 or Sonic 2 and "will not work with non-Sonic cartridges"; it names no other cartridge, Sonic 1 included. Takashi Iizuka said Sonic 1's world was built for Sonic and didn't work right with other characters, so the team sent players to the special stages instead.	`p. 2p. 2`	Manual
