- Benj Edwards' history of Sid Meier's Civilization, written for the IGDA Preservation SIG's Digital Game Canon series, quoting Meier and Bruce Shelley.
- Notes
- A secondary account, but built on interviews with the designers: it reports Meier as a fan of Empire and describes SimCity's effect on him, then says that lesson plus a love of trains "served as the basis for Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon". Its SimCity and Railroad Tycoon statements are the author's synthesis; prefer Meier's own GDC talk (arstechnica-meier-civilization-origins-2017) where it exists.
