The Japanese manual calls a job a title of the heroes of the past, held in the crystals: changing to a job gives a character those heroes' power, so a Knight becomes a master of the sword and a Geomancer a master who controls nature. Fighting on in the same job raises its job level with ability points, and each level teaches the job's abilities. The manual says Final Fantasy V's battles use the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, in which time flows, so the player has to fight in step with the enemies' moves and changes. The English manual says the player has to plan ahead to avoid giving enemies more time to act.
