In the manual, ground the Imps dig out can't be built on until they have tiled it, which claims it. Once all the bare earth is claimed, they start to reinforce the walls, which takes a long time; a finished wall can't be tunnelled through by heroes or enemy Keepers without a Destroy Walls spell. dungeon-keeper/claiming

ManualDungeon Keeper manual ·p. 25, 12.1 "Digging"However, you aren’t able to build on this land yet, as it’s not owned by you. Once your Imps have finished digging out new land, they lay down some tiles. Once this has been done it means that you 've claimed the land and can build on it.Dungeon Keeper manual · p. 25, 12.1 "Digging"When all the bare earth has been claimed, the Imps start to reinforce the walls. This takes quite a bit of time but is very useful because, once completed, heroes and enemy Keepers are unable to tunnel into your Dungeon without a Destroy Walls spell.Checked by claude, 2026-10-26 — found the passages in the pinned OCR textCited by: Dungeon Keeper

In the manual, veins of gold are marked for digging like earth, and the Imps carry the gold they dig to a Treasure Room. Without one, the gold stays on the ground and doesn't count toward the dungeon's wealth. dungeon-keeper/gold-haul
